Jacmel is a beautiful town full of vibrancy and life, situated in a nook on the Caribbean Sea. It is also the location of the mural that we painted with a group of fellow college students and Haitian artists. A white wall towered over all of us in a courtyard of an art gallery one morning in March 2018. By the end of the day it was covered in a chaos of beautiful color and textures. The colors of the mural poured out of the artists, and it slowly became a wonderful culmination of the day’s events. A memory that stuck with me was the gratitude all of the artists took that day in April. Everyone had came together and danced to celebrate each other’s presence and express gratitude for the day. The art of dance was a beautiful tie between artists that couldn’t speak through the same language.
Art was our unifying language.
